SMT transformers deliver high dielectric strength

TDK’s new EPCOS range of SMT transformers offer high dielectric strength for a range of DC/DC converter topologies.

TDK Corp. has introduced its family of EPCOS E13EMHV SMT transformers with high dielectric strength for a range of DC/DC converter topologies. The isolation distances meet the IEC 60664-1, 61558-2-16 standard with a high working voltage of 1000 VDC. They can handle transient overvoltages of up to 2500 Vpeak. The high dielectric strength between the primary and secondary sides is 3000 VAC (50 Hz, 60 seconds).

The B78308*A003 series transformers also save space with a footprint of 12.9 × 15.8 × 11.4 mm. Thanks to the internal construction of the transformers it meets requirements for clearance and creepage distances according to the IEC 60664-1 standard (Np/Ns: min. 8.14 mm clearance, min. 11.2 mm creepage).

The transformers are available for a range of DC/DC converter topologies. Two types are available for the flyback topology with turns ratios of 1 : 0.22 : 0.78 and 1 : 0.33 : 0.7. Three types are available for push-pull and half-bridge converters with turns ratios of 1 : 1.07 and 1 : 1 : 0.57 : 2.14.

The transformers have a frequency range from 100 kHz to 500 kHz and a very low coupling capacitance of 2 pF. The operating temperature ranges from -40°C to 150 °C. They are qualified to AEC-Q200 Rev. D and are suitable for a variety of DC/DC converter topologies and gate driver circuits in e-mobility and industrial electronics applications.

Last year, TDK introduced its EPCOS E10 EM series of insulated SMT transformers, also suited for a variety of DC/DC converter topologies and gate driver circuits (IGBTs) in e-mobility and industrial electronics applications. They come with a with a basic insulation working voltage of 500 VRMS and reinforced insulation of 300 VRMS.
