SiTime sets new benchmark for precision oscillator

SiTime’s SiT5503 precision oscillator offers higher reliability, smaller size, and lower power consumption than OCXOs used in edge networks.

SiTime Corp. announced the SiT5503 Elite X Super-TCXO, a ±5 ppb Stratum 3E precision oscillator for timing performance in data centers and 5G infrastructure. According to SiTime, the precision oscillator is 4× smaller, 4× lower power, and 30× more reliable than available OCXOs, and adds up to four hours of holdover capability to the Elite X product line.

These features enable the SiT5503 to replace larger, less robust, and power-hungry quartz OCXOs in edge networks, said SiTime.

The MEMS-based SiT5503 can be factory-programmed to any combination of frequency, voltage, and pull range. This enables designers to optimize the clock configuration and eliminate the long lead time and customization costs of quartz TCXOs, said the company.

Features and benefits include a 1-60 MHz any-frequency output, ±5-ppb stability over the operating temperature range of -40°C to 95°C, ±0.3 ppb/°C stability over temperature slope, 0.5 ppb/day daily aging, and ±3200 ppm digital control. Power consumption is 110 mW at 2.5 V. The supply voltage is 2.5 V, 2.8 V, 3.0 V, or 3.3 V.

The SIT5503 offers a 0.2 ps/mV power supply noise rejection (PSNR), which eliminates the need for a dedicated LDO for the TXCO, said SiTime. It also claims a 20× better phase noise under vibration, which minimizes call and/or link drops in high-vibration applications, according to the company.

Housed in a 7.0 × 5.0-mm package, SiT5503 TCXO samples are currently available. Volume production is expected in the first half of 2023.
