Flex upgrades voltage regulator module

The upgraded Flex BMR510 voltage regulator module provides an efficiency boost and greater flexibility to meet power demands in new designs.

Flex Power Modules just upgraded its BMR510 two-phase voltage regulator module. The module now uses advanced magnetic core materials, enabling high inductance in a small package size and lower switching frequency operation compared with previous gapped ferrite cores.

The BMR510 delivers 80 A continuous (140 A peak) output current at 0.5-1.3 V from an input of 4.5-16 V. A reduction in switching losses improves efficiency by 1.5% to 90% compared with the previous solution at 13.5 V input, 0.8 V/40 A output. Flex first introduced the BMR510 in February 2022 with an 88.5% efficiency.

At 10 × 9 × 7.6 mm, the solution is a complete power stage including MOSFETs and drivers with integrated inductors for space-constrained applications such as CPUs, GPUs, IPUs, high-end FPGAs, and high-performing ASICs with a current demand of over 100 A, common in current AI applications.

The small, halogen-free device features top-side cooling, supports tri-state PWM inputs from the controller and provides a separate enable input. The terminations are either solder-bump or optionally LGA. Over-temperature and over-current protection are included, along with sensed values for remote monitoring. Thermal models are also available.

The BMR510 is the first in a series of single and multiphase integrated power stages introduced by the company. Future devices will feature different variations of total numbers of phases, output current rating, and footprints that support current and next-generation silicon devices.

The BMR510 will be released for production by the end of the fourth quarter in 2022. Samples are available now.
