Supercapacitor modules target high-voltage storage

Cornell Dubilier (CDE) has introduced a new line of standard supercapacitor modules that addresses the need for higher voltage storage capabilities. The DSM series is offered in packs with three, six or 10 cells in series for 9-V, 18-V and 30-V outputs.

The capacitance values of the supercapacitor modules range from 0.15 to 36.6 farads. As a safe alternative to lithium-ion batteries, these modules are rated for temperatures up to 85°C, and unlike lithium-ion batteries, there is no charge/discharge cycle degradation and no risk of dangerous thermal runaway, said CDE.

The operating temperature range is –40°C to 65°C at 9 V, 18 V, and 30 V, with an extended temperature range of –40°C to 85°C at 7.5 V, 15 V and 25 V. The storage temperature range is –40°C to 65°C. Life is rated for 500,000 cycles at 25°C and 1,000 hours at rated voltage.

CDE said the wide operating temperature and voltage ratings expand the range of applications. These include MRI systems, GPS, industrial backup and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). “They can be rapidly implemented in power systems for energy harvesting, storage and backup applications” and eliminate “the need for engineering resources to create an energy storage solution.”

Key features include integrated-cell balancing, insulated construction and cable/connector assemblies, including a Molex Mini-Lock connector. Customization is available for a variety of features, including different form factors, mounting options, cell balancing, protection and connectivity.

The DSM Series modules are RoHS compliant and the individual cells in the modules meet UL 810A. They are available from select authorized distributors. Click here for the data sheet.
