LiDAR reference design delivers 3D mapping for robotics

Newsight Imaging has released its MT LiDAR 3.1 reference design that delivers high-accuracy 3D mapping for robotics and industrial automation.

Delivering high accuracy 3D mapping for robotics and industrial automation, Newsight Imaging Ltd. has introduced the latest member of its Multi-Triangulation (MT) LiDAR reference design family. The new MT LiDAR 3.1 reference design is based on the company’s NSI9000 image sensor with 1024 × 480-pixel resolution and on-chip peak detection.

The NSI9000 depth sensor features Newsight’s multi-triangulation technology, which is designed for ultra-high accuracy for short-distance measurement applications. The new reference design enables full 3D mapping by a single scan, with 480 depth points, said the company, supporting a depth resolution of 20 μm – 1 mm, with the ability to achieve hundreds of frames per second.

Newsight said the new sensor is a result of five years of collaboration with its partners including Fraunhofer and Tower-Jazz.

Announced last year, the NSI9000 is an event-driven 3D CMOS image sensor. The new chip features 491,520 depth 5×5-micron pixels (1024 × 480), which the company claims is almost 5× more than its closest competitor. According to Newsight, “the unique pixel design provides ultra-high resolution images while being very cost-effective.”

The sensor is designed for an optimal distance of 0-200 meters. Other key features include global shutter with up to 132 fps on full resolution, depth accuracy of less than 1% of the distance and built-in sensor fusion, which allows the sensor to extract a full resolution B/W image with a depth image from the same frame data.

The image sensor also features Newsight’s enhanced time-of-flight (eTOF) technology, supporting the use of multi-sets of configurations and in-pixel accumulation. It also includes a depth calculating process that does not require heavy calculations and an expensive microcontroller, said the company.

The MT LiDAR 3.1 reference design helps engineers develop solutions based on Newsight’s chips and technology. It is designed to be highly configurable to meet different applications, including a variety of lighting conditions. The MT LiDAR 3.1 reference design is available for purchase.
