Battery-protection ICs protect wearables

Smaller form factors, longer battery life and cost savings are key to today’s wearable, hearable and smart IoT device designs. GLF Integrated Power has unveiled a new IQSmart battery-protection IC family designed for a variety of thin battery-powered devices including Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless earphones, hearing aids and wearables.

The GLF73610 product family, one of the smallest lithium-ion/polymer battery-protection ICs, supports 4.2-V, 4.35-V, 4.4-V and 4.45-V lithium battery cells. GLF’s advanced IQSmart load switch topology, requiring minimal external components, virtually eliminates deep discharge of the battery during product shipment, storage and stand-by, said the company.

A shipping mode pin prevents smart devices with a non-removable battery from discharging during the shipping period. The GLF73610 is activated only by a VON voltage from a charger output.

Key features include over-charge and over-discharge detection, short circuit protection, 0-V battery minimum voltage for charging and reverse polarity connection protection. Over-charge and discharge voltage protections keep a rechargeable battery working within the desired safe operating condition. The “Zero Volt” feature allows even a deeply discharged battery to be recharged and a self-lock feature prevents battery leakage during manufacturing.

Should a battery be charged past the overvoltage detection level, the battery-protection IC’s charging switch opens at a preset delay time. The short circuit delay time also prevents false triggers that might open the switch. When voltage decreases below the set over-discharge level, the switch cuts off the power rail, resulting in ultra-low battery consumption. When the load current reaches the short-circuit protection level, the IC switches and remains off to avoid system damage.

Housed in a tiny 0.97 × 0.97 × 0.55-mm CSP, these battery-protection ICs are priced at $0.38 in quantities of 10,000. Small volumes are in stock and large quantities require 16 weeks (ARO).
