Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed a new line of multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) that are well suited for electric vehicle (EV) applications. The new EVA series addresses the greater isolation requirements of 800-V EV powertrains with an extended 10-mm creepage distance, together with 305 VAC/1500 VDC voltage ranges.
Murata said the safety-certified Y2-class MLCCs, developed in accordance with IEC60384-14 requirements, are “highly effective” at suppressing common mode noise in next-generation EVs.
The AEC-Q200-qualified MLCCs also address the need for continued miniaturization in automotive systems. The capacitors are housed in surface-mount packages, measuring 12.7 × 6 mm with a 3.7-mm profile height.
Murata attributes the use of the company’s advanced resin molding capabilities to the new line’s small size and extended creepage distance.
Key specs include a capacitance value range from 0.1nF to 4.7nF, elevated withstand voltages of 2000 VAC (60 s) and 4000 VDC (60 s) and an operating temperature range of -55˚C to 125˚C. They also feature low equivalent series inductance (ESL) and use a metal terminal arrangement, which mitigates the formation of solder cracks and deflection cracks, said Murata.
In addition to EV powertrains, the EVA series is suited for a variety of applications, such as on-board chargers (OBCs), inverters and DC/DC converters, battery management systems (BMS) and wireless power transfer (WPT) implementations.
