Kyocera AVX is offering three new multilayer organic (MLO) filter series, claiming best-in-class performance for a variety of RF applications. Designed using company’s MLO high-density interconnect technology, the LP Series MLO low-pass filters, HF Series MLO high-pass filters and BP Series MLO band-pass filters exhibit a high dielectric constant and high lot-to-lot repeatability. Low material losses enable high-Q passive printed elements, such as inductors and capacitors, in a multilayer stack.
The filters are not subject to performance variations caused by temperature changes and expansion of organic PCBs, resulting in greater reliability than standard silicon and ceramic filter solutions, according to the company. Typical applications for the three series include mobile communications, 5G, radar, signal processing, instrumentation and test equipment.
Key features of all three series include low parasitic and insertion loss, effective heat dissipation, very high rejection and improved solderability. The filters are rated for 50-Ω impedance up to 12 GHz (and soon up to 20 GHz), and provide an extended operating temperature range from -55°C to 85°C. The MLO filters are 100% electrically tested.
Thanks to the material technology, the filters integrate inductors and capacitors into small, low-profile land grid array surface-mount packages for a reduction in circuit complexity and board space as well as improved performance and reliability compared to discrete inductors and capacitors, according to the company.
The LP Series filters are rated for 4-W continuous power handling, frequencies from 71 MHz to 7.09 GHz and less than 1.2-dB insertion loss for passband frequencies extending from DC-f0. The filters support a variety of frequency bands and multiple wireless standards.
The HF Series MLO filters are rated for 2-W continuous power handling. They feature passband frequencies from 740 MHz to 8 GHz and a maximum of 1.20-dB insertion loss.
The BP Series MLO filters feature steep roll-off and high rejection of out-of-band frequencies and are rated for 1-W or 2-W continuous power handling, frequencies from 770 MHz to 4.68 GHz and less than 5-dB insertion loss. They are currently available in six case sizes (2616, 3116, 3416, 4016, 4617 and 5021) and are suitable for use in military and EMS radios, UAVs, base stations and wireless access points and terminals.
All of the new filters are available in RoHS compliant and lead-free compatible variants in a variety of case sizes from 2616 to 5021 with maximum height profiles of 1.02 mm and gold terminations. They do not contain substances of very high concern (SVHCs).
The MLO filters are currently available in waffle packs or tape and reel in quantities of 250 or 1,000. Custom MLO filters are available.
