Linear TMR sensor delivers high precision, accuracy

Infineon’s XENSIV TLI5590-A6W linear TMR sensor enables high-precision length measurements in industrial and consumer applications.

Infineon Technologies AG recently launched the XENSIV TLI5590-A6W magnetic position sensor that incorporates the company’s expertise in magnetic position sensing with its linearized tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) technology. The linear TMR sensor comes in a wafer-level package suitable for linear and angular incremental position detection.

The TMR sensor is qualified for industrial and consumer applications such as industrial sensors, human machine interface (HMI), medical and multi-purpose cameras. It is suited for positioning lenses for zoom and focus adjustment in cameras. It adheres to the JEDEC standard JESD47K and can be used as a replacement for optical encoders and resolvers.

Developed for high-volume sensor systems, the magnetic position sensor features ultra-high sensitivity, low jitter, high integration density and low power consumption. A high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and lower power enable cost-effective and lower battery consumption designs.

Compared with linear Hall sensors, TMR sensors offer improved linearity, lower noise, and lower hysteresis. Its reduced size supports miniaturization and position detection in microsystems, Infineon said.

The sensor provides accurate detection with rapidly changing directions. It consists of two TMR Wheatstone bridges. When combined with a multi-pole magnet, each bridge provides a differential output signal, which can be further processed for relative position measurement. The device combines high accuracy with stray field, improved linearity and sensitivity and low noise.

The TLI5590-A6W enables fine measurement with a very high accuracy of better than 10 µm, using a suitable linear or rotary magnetic encoder. With an extended operating temperature range of up to 125°C, its high temperature stability is suited for harsh environments.

The TLI5590-A6W is currently available. The sensor is housed in an extremely small 6-ball wafer level package SG-WFWLB-6-3.
