Buck converters support Intel processors

Application-specific buck converters from AOS are designed to power Intel’s Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake processor platforms.

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor Ltd. (AOS) has launched a new application-specific EZBuck regulator. The highly integrated AOZ22559QI and AOZ22539QI constant on-time buck converters support VCCPRIM_VNNAON rails in Intel Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake platforms.

Intel’s Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake platforms require VCCPRIM_VNNAON rails with high currents, which typically require a controller with external discrete power FETs or a converter with a large package, AOS said. The new buck converters include all necessary power silicon in a single QFN 4 × 4 package, providing 15 A in the AOZ22559QI and 12 A in the AOZ22539QI.

These buck converters, or buck regulators, are specifically designed to meet the specifications of the Intel Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake platforms. They have a nominal fixed voltage of 0.77 V; are supplied in system states of S0 through S5; and are capable of remote sensing to maintain accurate tolerance and account for ground bounce.

Other specs include a wide input voltage range 5.5 V to 25 V and high current capability of 15 A supporting Intel Itdc and 30 A supporting Intel Iccmax. The devices also feature low RDS(ON) internal NFETs (11 mOhm HS FET and 4 mOhm LS FET), a PGOOD output, an integrated bootstrap diode and an integrated soft start. Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limit, short-circuit protection (SCP), overvoltage protection (OVP) and thermal shutdown.

System designers can use the ILIM pin to adjust current limit levels, enabling them to balance the power choke to the output, the output’s current capability and the component size, AOS said.

The AOZ22559QI and AOZ22539QI devices have passed all the validation requirements to ensure compliance with Intel specifications. Intel also approved both the AOZ22559QI and AOZ22539QI as key components on its Platform Component List (PCL) for the VCCPRIM_VNNAON power architectures.

The AOZ22559QI and AOZ22539QI devices are available in production quantities with a lead time of 12 weeks. Unit pricing is $1.40 for the AOZ22559QI and $1.30 for the AOZ22539QI in quantities of 1,000. AOS will feature the EZBuck regulators at APEC 2024 in booth #1345.
