Renesas expands timing solution portfolio

Renesas adds the FemtoClock 3 family of ultra-low-jitter clock generators and jitter attenuators to its timing solution portfolio.

Renesas Electronics Corp. has expanded its timing solution portfolio with the addition of the  FemtoClock 3 family, including ultra-low-jitter clock generators and jitter attenuators. The family includes an ultra-low 25 fs-rms jitter clock solution for wireline infrastructure, data center and industrial applications, exceeding 112 Gbits/s and 224 Gbits/s SerDes reference clock requirements.

The new FemtoClock 3 family includes device variants with jitter attenuation, synchronization and clock generation capabilities with 8 and 12 outputs. These multiple operating modes in a single chip simplify the clock tree.

Enabling cost-effective and easy-to-use clock tree designs for high-speed interconnect systems, the FemtoClock 3 devices provide industry-leading phase noise and jitter required to meet the next-generation SerDes designs using commonly available 48-MHz to 73-MHz crystals, Renesas said.

The highly integrated devices, with multiple clock and synchronization functions in a single device, can generate up to four frequency domains and offer integrated low drop out regulators (LDOs) with high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR), which reduces board complexity and cost, the company added.

In addition, the integrated non-volatile memory allows for device customization in the factory at no additional cost to the customer. Other features include an operating voltage of 1.8 V and low power dissipation of 1.2 W. The devices are compliant with ITU-T G.8262 and G.8262.1 for enhanced synchronous Ethernet.

The timing solutions are available in 48-pin VFQFPN (7 × 7 mm) and 64-pin VFQFPN (9 × 9 mm) packages. They can be combined with Renesas’ ClockMatrix, VersaClock, buffer and oscillator portfolios for wireline infrastructure and data center designs. Target applications include telecom switches and routers, top-of-rack data-center switches, medical imaging and broadcast audio & video.

Designers also can use the Renesas IC Toolbox (RICBox) application to configure and program the devices on the evaluation board. RICBox interfaces with the Renesas Lab on the Cloud platform.

Renesas has developed Winning Combinations reference designs using the FemtoClock 3 with compatible devices, including the 1600G Fixed Form Factor Switch. The FemtoClock 3 devices and evaluation boards are available from Renesas and its distribution partners.
