Wi-Fi 6 combo module features integrated antennas

Insight SiP’s highly integrated ISP5261 Wi-Fi 6 combo module enables long autonomous operation on battery power.

Insight SiP has launched its ISP5261 Wi-Fi 6 combo module that acts as a fully functioning Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi radio node, with the capability of long autonomous operation on battery power. This miniature combo module can form the core of an autonomous IoT device that requires Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi connectivity, said the company.

The miniature module, measuring 12 × 12 × 1.8 mm, offers high integration and miniaturization of RF technologies based on system-in-package technology and the company’s proprietary antenna-in-package techniques. Based on NXP Semiconductor’s RW612 single-chip Wi-Fi/Bluetooth LE/802.15.4 wireless microcontroller (MCU) system on chip (SoC), the module integrates a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M33 CPU running at 260 MHz, additional 4-MB QSPI flash memory and 1.2 MB-SRAM as well as analog and digital peripherals.

The module also integrates decoupling capacitors, a 40-MHz crystal for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE and a 32.768-kHz crystal for low-power timing, DC/DC converters, RF matching circuits and a dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) antenna. With low power consumption and advanced power management, the module delivers battery lifetimes up to several months using AA batteries, the company said.

Bluetooth LE connectivity is compliant with Bluetooth 5.4 for long-range communications. The module’s Bluetooth LE section, used in either peripheral or central roles, handles up to 16 simultaneous central/peripheral connections. The module also supports Matter and Thread protocols, providing support for smart-home applications. Security features include an ARM TrustZone processor and a NXP Edgelock hardware security module that supports root of trust, secure communication and update verification.

Wi-Fi communication is compliant with the Wi-Fi Alliance specifications for Wi-Fi 6 including the following protocols: IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a/g/b/e/i/k/v/w. The modules are not yet in mass production.
