ESD protection devices target wearables

Taiwan Semiconductor’s TESDx Series ESD protection devices, with proprietary clamping and low capacitance, exceed IEC standards.

Taiwan Semiconductor Co., Ltd. has launched a new series of ultra-small ESD protection devices for wearables and other high-density electronic products. The 3.3-V and 5-V TESDx Series, housed in the DFN0603 package, exceed the IEC 61000-4-2 20-kV contact discharge standard and the IEC 6100-4-5 4-A peak pulse current, with margin. They also claim the industry’s lowest capacitance for full USB 3.0 data rates.

The TESDx Series use the company’s proprietary clamping cells to prevent overvoltage damage from ESD and lightning on control, power and data lines.

“The 3.3- and 5.0-volt models in the series provide full-compliance electrostatic discharge and electronic fast-transient protection, with margin, said Sam Wang, vice president, TSC Products, in a statement. “When protecting high-speed data signals, they also offer extremely low capacitance to ensure that the signal integrity in the application remains within spec and uncompromised.”

The TESDx Series is available in three models. These include the 3.3-V/40-W TESDH3V3B03P1Q0 (0.2-pF capacitance), the 3.3-V/70-W TESDL3V3B23P1Q0 (17-pF capacitance) and 5-V/100-W TESDH5V0B03P1Q0 (0.2-pF capacitance). A product filter is available that links to additional resources for each device.

Applications for the ESD protection series include wearable products, portable medical and test and measurement instrumentation and IoT/IIoT devices. Other applications include consumer electronics, computing, networking, peripherals, USB3.X ports and any application where ESD protection is needed and board space is a challenge.

Samples of the TESDx Series are in stock. Lead time for production quantities is 16 weeks ARO.
