With this column we'll have a look at a few integrated passive devices, a tantalum capacitor, a SMT resistor, and one new power inductor.
ON Semiconductor has integrated passive devices
The High-Q Integrated Passive Device (IPD) process technology from ON Semiconductor offers a copper on high resistivity silicon platform ideal for the production of passive devices such as baluns, filters, couplers, and diplexers that are used in portable, wireless and RF applications. IPD provides a cost effective solution for RF system in package. A foundry shuttle service is available for engineering prototypes. IPD technology supports fabrication of copper inductors, precision capacitors, and precision resistors in a world-class 200 mm wafer manufacturing facility. Design services are offered for custom applications. A full feature design kit is available to customers for layout, simulation, and verification.
On Semi’s IPD have the following CAD Tool Compatibility:
Schematic Capture – Cadence Virtuoso, Agilent ADS
Simulation – Ansoft HFSS, Agilent ADS
Place and Route – Cadence Virtuoso, Agilent ADS
Physical Verification – Cadence Assura, Mentor Calibre

ON Semiconductor also offers the NUF2441FC integrated passive filter with ESD protection. This device is designed for cell phone applications requiring headset and speaker phone EMI filtering and protection.
This device offers a solution in a small 1.72 x 1.22 mm flip-chip package reducing PCB space and cost. It will operate over -40° to 125°C with a breakdown voltage of 13.7 to 17.7 V. See http://goo.gl/2yoOSv.
IPDIA integrated passive devices
IPDIA of Caen France manufactures 3D passive devices. The IPD (Integrated Passive Device) provider focuses on 3D passive integration in silicon with an advanced technology called Passive Integrated Connective Substrate. High-density trench capacitors, MIM (Metal-insulator-Metal) capacitors, resistors, high-Q inductors, PIN diodes or zener diodes can be integrated in various packaging technologies with active devices suitable for very high reliability applications such as medical-grade components.
Their 3D silicon capacitors are said to be the world's highest density. Silicon capacitors are used throughout a wide range of applications such as power decoupling, signal coupling, pump charging, DC/DC power conversion. www.ipdia.com/index.php?page=our_products
AVX offers passive micro components
PMC thin-film technology offers comprehensive materials and processes combinations allowing electronic designers superior space saving, tolerance and signal integrity for semi-custom designs in the MHz to GHz frequency spectrum. The substrate can house SiCr and TaN resistors, NP0 and X7R capacitors, and inductors with Cu 1 to 20 μm thick.
Benefits include 0.05% tolerance or match, controlled parasitic ESR and ESL, 4 μm line widths, laser trimming and tuning at die and wafer level, and with termination options of BGA, LGA, or wire bond. These are semi-custom parts and, generally, not available off the shelf. www.avx.com/docs/Catalogs/pmc.pdf
New tantalum SMT capacitors from AVX
AVX has introduced the “Professional” series of Tantalum chip capacitors with conductive polymer electrodes. Seem like a funny designation to me. The other capacitors AVX makes are not “professional”? The TCR series come in 1210,2312, and 2917 chip sizes with 0.47 to 100 µf values and 10 to 63 V rating. They do have some nice traits including improved basic reliability of 0.5%/1000hrs 85°C/85 r.h. 120 hours and -55 to +105°C operation temperature. They fit long life time DC/DC converter applications in telecom, Industrial, avionics. www.avx.com/docs/catalogs/tcr.pdf
Tiny resistors from Stackpole
Stackpole Electronics has expanded its metal film MELF series, MLF/MLFM to include the tiny 0102 size. This size is offered in 1/8 and 1/5 W power ratings and is capable of tolerances down to ±0.1% and TCR's as low as ±15 ppm and a working voltage of 150 or 200 V. Values range for 100 Ω to 2 MΩ. www.seielect.com/Catalog/SEI-MLF_MLFM.pdf
TDKs new SMD inductors
The new CLF7045NI-D wirewound SMD power inductors feature high reliability over a temperature range extending from -55° to 150°C and offer rated inductance values from 1.0 μH to 470 μH.
Measuring 7.4 x 7.0 x 4.5 mm, they are available for rated currents of 0.41 to 8.5 A and offer DC resistance values ranging from 9 mΩ to 1.20 Ω. Mass production will be launched in August 2015. The devices are qualified to AEC-Q200. http://product.tdk.com/inductor/ind/en/catalog/index.php#automotive
