The basic timing element of mobile electronic systems, the quartz-crystal resonator, has until now been able to fend off any competitors. But the promise of MEMS to provide better performance has finally been realized in SiTime’s SiT8021 μPower MHz MEMS Oscillator.
At 1.5 x 0.8 mm, it is the industry’s smallest MHz oscillator, covering a 1- to 26-MHz range with ±100 ppm frequency stability. Furthermore, it is also the lowest power, consuming a mere 60 μA, and lightest, weighing in at just 1.28 mg. Many designers of mobile, wearable, and IoT devices have already found these specs to be just what they want, so expect to see the SiT8021 coming to a product near you in 2016.
