A teardown of the Google Daydream View VR headset

A breakdown of the easiest-to-use VR headset

Finding the perfect virtual reality headset can be rather difficult. The Google Cardboard is cheap and simplistic. The Gear VR headset is only compatible with Samsung phones. The costly Oculus Rift and HTC Vive require expensive gaming PCs and setups. Those interested in the PlayStation VR, you’ll need a PS4. But with the Google Daydream View VR headset, you could finally get all you’ve been looking for.

The device is a soft cloth eye box that turns any compatible phone into a VR headset, making it one of the easiest to use. It comes with its own Wii-like motion controller for managing objects and menus in virtual reality.

To set up the VR headset, you open its front door and remove the included controller. Make sure your phone is on and then place it on the door. Close the door, put the headset on your head, and adjust until the image looks clear. You can adjust the straps, hold down a button on the controller to regulate it, and then begin playing.

At 167.51 mm long, 92.35 mm wide, and 99.88 mm thick, weighing 218.5 grams, the Google Daydream View VR headset is portable and easy to set up and use. The device features a Bluetooth remote controller that has a touchpad, buttons, and status light. Its sensors include a 6-axis MEMS accelerometer and gyroscope, as well as a 3-axis electronic compass. Equipped with a 3.7-V, 218-mAh Li-Polymer battery, the Google Daydream lasts up to 12 hours on a single charge. It is available at retail for $79.99.
