Adaptec RAID Controllers with Intelligent Power Management Matched with Hitachi Ultrastar Hard Drives and Supermicro Server Deliver Green Enterprise-class Storage Performance

Adaptec is demonstrating the company's energy-saving Intelligent Power Management solution for high-performance storage. Teaming-up with Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and Super Micro Computer the live demo showcases up to 40 percent savings in storage energy consumption using Adaptec Intelligent Power Management in enterprise-class storage environments, without sacrificing performance.

While supercomputers push the limits of performance, they also push the limits of power consumption. The Adaptec Intelligent Power Management high-performance demo at SC08 proves that super performance can also be super 'green’. Featuring Adaptec's Series 5 Unified Serial(R) RAID controllers, Hitachi's Ultrastar A7K1000 and Ultrastar 15K450 enterprise hard disk drives, and Supermicro's SuperServer 6015C-M3B, this demo provides a real world example of how any system builder, integrator or IT manager can create a high-performance computing environment today and still be capable of minimizing power consumption, resulting in enormous cost and energy savings.

Offered as standard on all Adaptec Series 5 and Series 2 RAID controllers, Intelligent Power Management reduces storage power consumption by up to 70 percent. Supporting both SATA and SAS drives through Adaptec Storage Manager software, it is ideal for applications with large blocks of idle time, such as such as media ISPs, bulk email, backup, archive, print and file serving.

Intelligent Power Management can be particularly beneficial in supercomputing environments where petabytes of data are being generated for advanced scientific research projects, modeling of financial data, or oil exploration, for example. In these supercomputing environments, data is not accessed frequently, eliminating the need for constant full power.

Intelligent Power Management allows drives to be operated in three power states — Normal (full power), Standby(1) (low-power), and Power-off (disks not spinning) — managed by user preferences. Blackout periods can be set in which power management features are disabled, allowing users full access to data — during daytime business hours.

The Adaptec RAID Series 5 controller family is the first RAID solution offering up to 28-port connectivity with both internal and external ports to achieve massive scalability (up to 256 devices for total capacities of up to 250TB) and I/O performance up to 5X faster than competitive products. The low-profile Series 2 RAID controllers, built on the same Adaptec architecture used in Series 5, provide significant performance enhancement and scalability to low-cost data storage systems.
