Started 17 years ago, the Annual RoboSub competition is cosponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research, and aims to “advance the development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) by challenging a new generation of engineers to perform realistic missions in an underwater environment.”
This year, the Cornell University Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Team (CUAUV), which has won four times in the past five years, will be sponsored by ADLINK Technology. ALDINK, a ”provider of Industrial Building Blocks (IBB) and Industrial Application Platforms (IAP) for embedded computing, measurement and automation applications,” will be providing them with their Express-HL COM Express computer-on-module. The module features a 4th generation quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with a Mobile Intel QM87 Express chipset, and the team hopes that it will help make their vehicle lightweight, with as small a carbon footprint as possible without sacrificing performance.
The 2014 CUAUV vehicle is called the Gemini, and team members believe that ADLINK’s support will help them a great deal. CUAUV team leader and Cornell University senior Markus Burkartd explains: “When we started designing Gemini back in August (2013), we knew that we wanted something smaller and more powerful than the 3rd generation Intel Core i7 processor on Mini-ITX form factor that we used on our 2013 vehicle.” They then decided that the best option was a quad-core computer-on-module was the best option, and were “really happy” when ADLINK agreed to be their sponsor and provide them with their Express-HL COM Express computer-on-module .
