ADSL modem chipset employs
controllerless design

Modem functions are implemented by host
processor, eliminating a dedicated processor
chip
The Unicorn customer-premise ADSL-modem chipset
claims to be the first to employ a controllerless
design with a USB or PCI interface, reducing
cost, size, and power consumption while allowing
firmware updates to extend product lifetimes. The
set consists of the digital ST70137 chip and
either the ST70134A (for PCI) or ST70136 (for
both PCI and USB) analog front end chip.

The chipset offers full compatibility with
full-rate and G.lite ADSL standards as well as
Windows 98, 2000, and ME plug and play. Power
consumption is 0.7 W in active mode, making the
set USB compatible. (From $20 ea/10,000–stock to
8 weeks ARO.)
