Aereo to release new Android app on October 22

Controversial service launches mobile app to stream live TV

Aereo, a controversial technical service that allows viewers to stream live broadcast TV online, will release its very first mobile app in two weeks, available for Android devices. The app is the next step in Aereo’s goal of making its service more available and more convenient to use, something that will be aggressively protested by broadcasters, but very much appreciated by Aereo users.

Traditionally used through a web browser, that has been made an iOS-specific mobile site, Aereo’s new app will open a variety of new possibilities to its users. According to Aereo, the app will be in a “public beta” upon its release, and will require Android 4.2 or higher in order to function. Android viewing is not supported by Aereo’s web browser and will not be until the app’s release.

Despite court disagreements with TV broadcasters about their service, the release of this app continues Aereo’s trend of service expansion this year, after the company received a $38 million round of funding. Aereo debuted its service in Miami, Houston, and Dallas this September and seems to have no plans to slow down the pace of its expansion.. Originally a service that operated exclusively in New York City, the company revealed its goal to be operating in 22 new cities by the end of the year. While users will only be able to stream local channels and major networks, Aereo offers a free month of service to new customers, something that its new app is sure to create.

Aereo plans to continue expanding after the app’s release in spite of protests from the broadcasting agency, with plans to launch in cities including Boston; Washington, DC; Baltimore; and Philidelphia.

The app will be available for Android inside of the Google Play store on October 22nd of this year. More about Aereo’s service can be found at their website.
