AFE enables superior image quality for portable medical devices
As ultrasound examinations are increasingly conducted in non-traditional environments, image quality is being sacrificed for the convenience of portability. A new imaging chip, the AD9271 analog front end (AFE) from Analog Devices (Electronic Products , May 2007, p. 108) promises to greatly ease this tradeoff by integrating a complete eight-channel (octal) ultrasound receiver on a single chip.
This level of integration allows medical equipment designers to reduce the size of the signal path for mobile ultrasound systems by 50% and lower power requirements by 25%all while achieving noise levels and other performance metrics required in critical care settings.
