AFEs boost noise/power performance

Suited for mid- to high-end Spectral Doppler ultrasound equipment, the AFE5807 and AFE5808 analog front-ends integrate a CW Doppler mixer and summing amplifier to provide a close-in phase noise better than –155 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz off a 2.5-MHz carrier, which eases design with CW beamforming. The AFE5807 consumes 88 mW/channel at 1.1 nV/√Hz, 40 Msamples/s, 12-bit sampling, while the AFE5808 offers a low-noise optimization of 0.75 nV/√Hz, 149 mW/channel, 65 Msamples/s, and a 14-bit ADC with 77 dBFS SNR.

Both integrate eight channels of the following components: LNA with 24/18/12-dB gain settings to enable 0.25/0.5/1-Vp-p linear input range, VCA and PGA with a total maximum gain of 54 dB, a third-order linear LPF with selectable bandwidth of 10, 15, 20, and 30 MHz, and 12- and 14-bit ADCs with LVDS output up to 65 Msamples/s. The devices also offer programmable mode and are housed in 135-pin BGA packages, which is claimed 25% smaller than competing devices. (Ea/1,000: AFE5807, $62; AFE5808, $68 — samples available now.)
