Typing on a smartphone is notoriously irritating. But a new start-up based out of Austin, Texas thinks they can solve that problem, by inventing a “keyless keyboard” that would allow you to quite literally type on air.
Currently in the prototype phase, the AirType project is the first “keyless keyboard” that actually is keyless. Meaning, unlike the projection keyboards everyone seems to be coming up with nowadays (some of which are pretty cool, like this one), the AirType system provides no visual aspect of the keys whatsoever. Their system allows you to type on l any surface—or no surface at all—because there’s nothing projected.
Rather, the AirType uses a pair of cuff-sensors—as you can see in the image above, they sort of look like fitness bands—designed to go around your knuckles, which track your finger movements in order to determine what keys you would be striking if you were typing on, say, your tablet or smartphone’s keyboard.

The cuff-sensors are designed to be small and mobile, and to fit easily on your hands. The system is also built with a type of adaptive technology that allows it to monitor and respond to your typing habits, so it will eventually become more in sync with how you naturally type. Aside from the cuffs, the AirType system will come with an accompanying app for text prediction and correction.
It’s definitely an amazing new project, although it will definitely be something that will require superb typing skills.
