Electric Power Steering System Sensors and Power ICs
Electronic Power Steering (EPS) systems are becoming prevalent in automotive systems and are quickly replacing hydraulic assist power steering. The move to EPS systems is driven by the necessity for improving overall fuel efficiency and reducing system cost in automobiles. EPS systems employ an electric motor, current sensors, voltage regulator, motor driver, and magnetic position sensors to replace a hydraulic based system that requires a pump, hoses, and fluids. A hydraulic system tends to be constantly driven to maintain fluid pressure resulting in a constant load on the engine. Whereas in an EPS based system, the electric motor is only driven when needed, resulting in better fuel economy.
