Amazon will bring a smartphone with 3D display to market this fall

Device would be first of its kind for digital commerce site

To say this was a long time coming would be a major understatement — after years (literally) of rumors and leaks, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) is reporting that this June, Amazon will officially announce the company’s intentions on bringing its first smartphone to market by September 2014.

The story was reported based on information provided by people familiar with the project, who added that Amazon has been demonstrating the smartphone for developers in San Francisco and Seattle recently.

Those who received the invite were apparently told to go to specific, very heavily guarded suites in unidentified hotels in both cities, to see the phone in person.

The obvious question is — what will Amazon bring to the already overcrowded marketplace? While specific details are obviously not available, the WSJ was able to uncover some interesting facts about it, including that the phone will feature four front-facing cameras / sensors to track the user’s gaze, and include a glasses-free 3D viewing experience.

Previous rumors about an Amazon smartphone never had this much detail to it, which makes this story all the more tantalizing. In addition to the sensors / cameras and 3D screen, the WSJ also adds that the company will request 600,000 units for its first order, and that Japan Display will serve as one of the device’s component manufacturers.

Production of the new device will (again, apparently) begin this April.
