Business Insider recently unveiled its top 50 most powerful companies in America, and among them were a number of tech corporations.
To determine the level of power, BI factored together 2014 revenue, number of employees, press mentions on Google News, and social media influence as ranked on a scale of 1 to 100 by Klout, a site that analyzes social-media influence of companies and individuals across all platforms.
Below is a list of the top 15, and some may surprise you.
15. Uber
2014 revenue: N/A
Number of employees: roughly 2,000
Uber, the transportation company that connects you with a driver in seconds through a mobile app, continues to grow. Although the company does not release revenue data, the Silicon-based service raised close to $1 billion in July, valuing it at $50 billion, and has a Klout score of 85.
14. Yahoo
2014 revenue: $4.98 billion
Number of employees: 12,500
Yahoo generated more than $1 billion in revenue in 2014 through its mobile, video, native, and social channels. The company now reaches 575 million mobile users, making it one of the largest mobile audiences around the world. Yahoo also entered a partnership with Mozilla in 2014 to use Yahoo.com as the default homepage for Firefox in the U.S., which categorizes it as the fifth most popular site in the world and with a Klout score of 98.
13. Cisco Systems
2014 revenue: $47.1 billion
Number of employees: 74,042
After a tough 2014 year, Cisco Systems is expected to make a comeback with a new CEO who is already working to fix costly mistakes. The Silicon Valley-based company has a Klout score of 92, which is expectedly high considering most Internet traffic runs through Cisco Systems.
12. eBay
2014 revenue: $17.9 billion
Number of employees: 34,600
eBay, who is in its 20th year of operation, has command over 203 shopping markets worldwide and a Klout score of 94. In 2014, the California-based company announced its split from PayPal, but is still managing to do well.
11. Facebook
2014 revenue: $12.7 billion
Number of employees: 10,955
At the top of the social media platform, Facebook drives more than two-thirds of mobile ecommerce traffic. Revenue was up 58% due to ads on the website, and in the summer of 2014 its market value topped $250 billion, making it the company to reach that number the quickest. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that 1 in 7 people on Earth used Facebook in a single day, which could account for its Klout score of 98.
10. Oracle
2014 revenue: $38.23 billion
Number of employees: 132,000
As the premier cloud provider, Oracle serves 400,000 clients, including every Fortune 100 company. Last year the company even surpassed IBM to become the world's second-largest software vendor by sales. With a Klout score of 87, the company is influential on social media and is working to simplify IT and lead industry innovation.
9. Hewlett-Packard
2014 revenue: $111.5 billion
Number of employees: 302,000
After announcing that it will cut 25,000-30,000 jobs, Hewlett-Packard may not be as highly ranked as you may have thought. But the company brought in over $100 billion last year alone and remains a dominant corporation. With almost a million followers on Twitter and a Klout score of 92, HP has a strong presence on social media.
8. Intel
2014 revenue: $55.25 billion
Number of employees: 106,700
As the world’s leading semiconductor chipmaker, Intel has a market cap of $140 billion. But last year, the company lost billions of dollars by going after its plummeting mobile phone business. Intel expects to replenish its losses with the release of Apple’s new iPhones since the company has been using Intel chips for its computers since Steve Jobs announced the switch from IBM in 2005. Intel commands a Klout score of 96 and has 4.26 million Twitter followers and over 25 million fans on Facebook.
7. Verizon
2014 revenue: $127.1 billion
Number of employees: 178,500
As the largest telecommunications company in the U.S., Verizon acquired AOL and its subsidiary brands, The Huffington Post and TechCrunch, in a $4.4 million deal in May 2015. With 1.6 million Twitter followers, more than 7 million likes on Facebook, and a Klout score of 86, Verizon has a definite online presence.
6. Google (Alphabet Inc.)
2014 revenue: $66 billion
Number of employees: 53,600
Although rebranded as Alphabet Inc., the giant tech innovator continues to retain its ranking as one of the best companies to work for in America; it features a Klout score of 98.
5. IBM
2014 revenue: $92.8 billion
Number of employees: 379,592
IBM holds a strong base of loyal customers and powerful partners, including corporations such as Apple and Citigroup. The company is expected to grow as it is getting into the Internet of Things, which is expected to become a $1.7 trillion market within the next five years. However, IBM falls a bit behind on social media with no Klout score.
4. Apple
2014 revenue: $182.9 billion
Number of employees: 92,600
Easily one of the most recognized names in tech, Apple continues to grasp the market with new innovations, including new iPhones, iPad, TV, and watches this year. Where the company may fall a bit short is with its Klout score of 84, but this may be accounted for the fact that Apple does not have a direct Twitter account. Nonetheless, Apple Music commands 7.73 million Twitter followers and the App Store has 4.09 million, two rather impressive numbers.
3. AT&T
2014 revenue: $131.6 billion
Number of employees: 250,730
The Texas-based mobile service provider is now also the largest pay-TV provider in the US thanks to a recent $48.5 billion deal with DirecTV. AT&T’s 4G LTE covers more than 300 million people. With a Klout score of 91, 691,000 Twitter followers, and 5.7 million Facebook likes, AT&T is the only telecommunications company to rank on Fortune’s most admired companies list.
2. Microsoft
2014 revenue: $86.83 billion
Number of employees: 118,000
Microsoft has been on an incline, with revenues up 11% from last year and tablet sales continuing to grow. The Surface brought in over $1 billion in sales in the fourth quarter last year. It’s also no surprise Microsoft is social media savvy, earning a near-perfect Klout score of 99.
1. Amazon
2014 revenue: $88.99 billion
Number of employees: 154,100
As the largest e-commerce site in the country, Amazon owns over 40 subsidiaries, including Zappos, IMDb, and GoodReads. The company refuses to be left behind in the consumer-electronics market, and announced an e-reader and tablet to compete with Apple. It also launched Amazon Instant Video, which has produced an award-winning original television series. Amazon has a strong presence on social media as well, with a Klout score of 99.
