Analyzer/emulator is first for testing SuperSpeed USB
Works for both current USB 2.0 and upcoming USB 3.0 5.1-Gbit/s protocol
The first protocol analyzer/exerciser system for testing USB 3.0 devices, the Voyager verification system aims to help developers bring USB 3.0 products to market faster, while ensuring compatibility with existing USB 2.0 products. Known informally as SuperSpeed USB and scheduled for formal release this fall, the USB 3.0 standard will permit data rates up to 5 Gbits/s 10 times faster than USB 2.0 and is being promoted by Intel, HP, Microsoft, NEC, NXP, and TI for fast-sync transfers among PCs, consumer electronics, and mobile devices.
The verifier leverages the manufacturer’s prior experience with PCI Express, to which USB 3.0 with its 8b10b data scrambling (LFSR) and SSC is very similar. To check new designs for backward compatibility with USB 2.0, the analyzer provides simultaneous protocol capture of both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 signaling.
For testing USB 3.0’s low power and improved protocol efficiency, Voyager uses a CATC-Trace display to illustrate the protocol, with enhancements to accelerate link testing. Advanced triggering, hardware filtering, and Spec View are designed to help developers quickly understand and verify protocol behavior.
The system is available initially with analysis capability for device development; exerciser capability will be available via software when the final spec is released. (Analyzer only, $25,000; analyzer/exerciser, $30,000 — available starting in September.)
