APEC steams into port of Long Beach

The most popular power electronics show in the United States is nearing port and ready to pull into the Long Beach, CA, convention center, but you still have time to make arrangements to attend. If you’re a typical engineer, you love learning and tinkering with everything. Well, here’s your chance to get focused information for your job in power electronics. You can get updated or new information from 21 professional education seminars  on topics such as a basic power electronics design tutorial; getting from 48 V to load voltage using GaN dc/dc converters; a comprehensive introduction (is that an oxymoron?) to implementing a fully digital PFC boost converter; or a PMBus review (you can find more information on the seminar from lecturer Bob White). And those are just the Sunday seminars. There are 20+ lectures from Tuesday through Thursday and nearly 20 poster sessions, in which you can talk directly with the authors.

The always interesting and forward-looking plenary session on Monday will have six speakers from 1:30 to 5 p.m., offering topics that include:

  • The challenges of VHF power conversion
  • The future of power electronic design
  • Breaking speed limits with GaN power ICs
  • Residential nanogrids with battery storage — is this our future?
  • The future of magnetic design for power electronics
  • Why do power supplies fail? A real-world analysis

The popular rap sessions return with a few discussions, including one about the future of semiconductor technology development; power electronics for the IoT; and refueling technologies for electric vehicles. If you need quick access to information, download the APEC mobile app, which will be available soon. Finally, remember to allow some time to let go and have fun at the Wednesday night social, “Surfin’ Safari” with Beach Boys cover band The Beach Toys.
