Apple is finally buying back old damaged iPhones

Apple will soon launch an upgraded iPhone trade-in program for devices with damaged screens, cameras, or buttons.

The current Apple Store Reuse and Recycle iPhone trade-in program lets customers sell older models in exchange for credit towards a newer device. However, the program does not accept phones with cracked screens, broken buttons, or damaged cameras.

Well, that is about to change. Beginning this week, Apple’s updated program will give customers credit for iPhone 5S, 6, and 6 Plus models that have reparations within reason, meaning devices cannot have been run over by a truck or suffer severe water damage. The company believes its improved program will encourage iPhone users to upgrade rather than simply replacing the screen.

The trade-in value will vary depending on the iPhone’s model and storage space, but reports note that $50 store credit will be issued for the 5S, $200 for the 6, and $250 for the 6 Plus.

Another change Apple is planning to roll out is the installation of screen protector machines in retail stores. The company has reportedly partnered with Belkin to supply stores with machines that will place screen protectors on iPhones for customers, something Apple employees were swayed away from doing in case the application went wrong. If the installation with the new machines does not go smoothly, Apple will offer a screen protector replacement and re-installation free of charge.

While the iPhone trade-in program is expected to be available within the upcoming days, the screen protector installment plan will take a few additional weeks to roll out.
