Apple unveils a battery case that gives you 25 hours of iPhone talk time

If you don’t mind having a battery bump in your pocket, then this case is for you.

If you need a battery pack that helps your iPhone make it throughout the entire day, then Apple has your answer. The Cupertino-based company unveiled the Smart Battery Case, its first official 1,877 mAh battery pack for the iPhone 6 and 6S that keeps your smartphone charged for 25 hours.

The $99 Smart Battery Case comes in white and charcoal gray and increases talk time up to 25 hours, Internet usage by 18 hours, and video playback up to 20 hours. Rather than being separated by multiple pieces as phone cases typically are, the iPhone slips right into the Smart Battery Case; the exterior chassis is made of silicone with microfiber lining adding enough flexibility for the user to pull down an edge and slip the iPhone in.

What’s most noticeable about the gadget is the case’s battery bump located right in the center of the pack on the back of the iPhone. Aside from that, the Smart Battery Case looks similar to Apple’s traditional iPhone cases. While competitors like Mophie have experimented with extending the length or width of the case in order to hide the battery, Apple wanted to maintain the iPhone’s thin design, which explains why it went with the necessary bump on the back.

The Smart Battery Case charges through Apple’s Lightning port, which makes it compatible with all Lightning docks, cables, and accessories. You can charge your iPhone and the case at the same time, making it convenient for when you’re on the go.

One downfall to the new case is that it doesn’t let you choose when to use the extra juice – as soon as you slip your iPhone into the Smart Battery Case, the phone will begin using the case’s battery power if it’s in need of a charge. If both the case and iPhone have full batteries, then the case’s juice will be used up first, followed by the iPhone’s own battery life.

As it currently stands, there is no word if Apple will release similar battery cases for the iPhone 6 Plus or 6S Plus.
