ARM-based 32-bit MCUs feature very low power

The SAM3S series microcontrollers use a Cortex-M3 core and feature low power operation with only 2.3 mW draw at 1 MHz. At the maximum operating frequency of 64 MHz, the processors consume just 1.45 mW/MHz.

The ICs come with 64 to 256 Kbytes of flash and has an optional external parallel bus interface, The devices have USB ports, SDIO, 12-bit 1-Msample/s A/D and D/A converters, four UARTs, dual I2 C and I2 S interfaces, timers, and a unique 128-bit chip ID. The chips run on 1.62 to 3.6 V and come in 48-pin QFP and QFN along with up to 100-pin QFP and BGA packages. The ICs also use on-die terminations to put integrated series resistors on the outputs with a typical value of 35 Ω, which reduce EMI. This feature lowers BOM cost and real-estate area. ($2.50 to $4.45 ea./10,000 — samples available now and 1st qtr 2010; production 2nd qtr 2010.)
