ARM processor targets FPGA designs

The Cortex-M1 processor is the first ARM processor designed specifically to be implemented on FPGAs. The IP is said to enable cost savings through rationalization of software and tools investments across multiple FPGA, ASIC, and ASSP projects and provide greater vendor independence.

The Cortex-M1 processor is a three-stage 32-bit RISC design that implements a subset of the Thumb-2 instruction set and runs at up to 170 MHz, The device is the smallest processor in the Cortex family, but can deliver 0.8 DMIPS/MHz. The M1 will be fully supported by forthcoming releases of the ARM RealView Development Suite and kits. (Contact manufacturer for pricing—available April.)
