Atmel Showcases New Smart Energy Solutions at European Utility Week

Scalable smart energy platform solutions offers lower bill of materials and provides best-in-class connectivity, metrology and advanced security for residential, poly-phase metering and smart-metering communications

Atmel Corporation, a global leader in microcontroller (MCU) and touch solutions, recently showcased its new and comprehensive smart energy platform designed specifically for smart grid communications, electricity, gas and water metering systems and energy measurement applications. Unveiled at the recent European Utility Week Conference in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, the Atmel SAM4Cx platform includes several system-on-chip (SoC) devices built around a dual-core ARM Cortex-M4 architecture with advanced security, metrology, wireless and power-line communications (PLC) options. The unique and highly flexible platform addresses OEM’s system partitioning, bill of materials (BOM) and time-to-market requirements with the widest range of integration and performance optimization options available in the market today.

“The global smart metering market is poised to explode,” said Dr. Howard Scott, Managing Director, Cognyst Advisors. “In order to succeed in this market, suppliers will need innovative solutions that integrate advanced features and at the same time adapt to regional and changing wireless and PLC communications standards across the globe.”

“Flexibility to address a new and diverse set of smart grid communications and metrology standards with low-power system-on-chip solutions are crucial requirements for OEMs targeting high-volume deployments,” said Kourosh Boutorabi, Atmel's Senior Director of Smart Energy Products. “We are excited to leverage Atmel’s industry leading technologies to address these OEM requirements as a new and innovative multilayered platform.”
Key features of the solution include best-in-class metrology with class 0.2 accuracy and dynamic range of up to 6,000:1 for single and poly-phase applications, low-power PRIME PLC connectivity with integrated line driver, advanced cryptography, ability to integrate application, communication and metrology, up to 2 Mbytes of embedded  Flash, 304 Kbytes of SRAM with external memory expansion option as well as low-power RTC, LCD, and anti-tamper feature sets which reduce the smart meter BOM by as much as 40%.
