Audio codec extends device playback by up to 40 hours
Device packs innovative new technologies and dramatically increases battery life during playback
Packed with innovative new technologies, the WM8903 codec is offered to dramatically extend playback time up to 40 hours for audio-enabled portable devices such as portable media players, multimedia handsets, and handheld gaming systems. The company also claims increased battery life during playback by 30% over current media players and 400% over multimedia products.
The codec features the company’s SmartDAC technology, a unique low-power DAC capacitor switching architecture. This enables DAC-to-headphone power consumption of just 4.4 mW and includes a capability for programmable performance vs. power profiles, allowing system designers to optimize for each usage scenario, such as docked or on the move.
The part also includes the company’s Class W amplifier technology, an evolution of Classes G and H, featuring an adaptive dual-drive charge pump and dc servo circuit architecture that intelligently tracks the actual music signal level and uses an adaptive dual-drive charge pump to optimize power dissipation. When in record mode, the codec implements an advanced dynamic range controller that optimizes recorded sound quality.
The WM8903 operates from a common 1.8-V supply for both analog and digital power rails. The 40-pin QFN-packaged part also includes sophisticated clamp and sequencer circuitry to extend its pop-and-click suppression. ($1.80 ea/10,000 samples available now.)
