Who knew bed sheets could get a tech upgrade? TexTales has launched a line of children’s bed sheets that have augmented reality images woven into the fabric.
The purpose of these characters? To be used for story time.
The technology is the result of a collaborative project from the Eindhoven University of Technology, Industrial Department. The sheets used display 3D images of fairy tale characters that can be picked up by smartphone or tablet. Parents simply download the TexTale app to their device, at which point they can then begin using the sheets to create stories with their kids during play time or before bedtime.
TexTales works with iOS 5 and higher gadgets, and Android 2.3 and higher devices. All gear must have a rear-facing camera in order to work.
TexTales is on Kickstarter right now trying to secure the funds necessary to go into production. Down the road, they foresee an open sourced community being developed; something that could serve as a platform for families to go on and create their own characters and stories, and share with others.
