I want a dragon. Everybody wants a dragon. But 7 year old Sophie Lester from Australia is the only person in the world who actually has a dragon, because the scientists who work at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization are beautiful people. The CSIRO scientists created Sophie’s dragon after receiving this painfully adorable letter:
Oh dear God the cuteness; I can’t
At first, CSIRO said what anybody says to little girls who really, really want dragons: that they hadn’t figured out how to make dragons, but they’re working very hard on coming up with a way. They published a sincere apology to Sophie on their blog—which, along with Sophie’s letter, proceeded to pop up across the entire Internet due to its overwhelming cuteness.
So, using the 3D printer at CSIRO’s additive manufacturing facility in Melbourne (which has printed parts for aerospace and biomedical purposes, as well as giant insects for some horrifying and probably nefarious reason) they created Sophie’s dragon, named Toothless, out of titanium. Here’s Toothless:

“Being that electron beams were used to 3D-print her, we are certainly glad she didn't come out breathing them… instead of fire,” said additive manufacturing operations manager Chad Henry on the CSIRO blog. “Titanium is super strong and lightweight, so Toothless will be a very capable flyer.”
Toothless is on her way to Sophie as we speak, where the two are sure to have a beautiful and lasting friendship because Australian scientists are beautiful, beautiful people.
