Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has released its KCA55 series of automotive-grade multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), housed in a small package size of 6.1 × 5.1 mm. The MLCC series is an Automotive IEC60384-14 X1/Y2 Class Certified Product (basic insulation product) and rated for 250 VAC (RMS), making them suited for automotive powertrain applications.
By adding Murata’s bond metal terminals to the external electrodes of the stacked MLCC chips, the company explained that it provides a more robust design, as the stress applied to the chip is relieved by the elastic action of the metal terminals supporting the chips. The MLCCs can withstand board deflection of 6 mm without cracking and solder cracking with up to 2,000 cycles of heat stress.
Murata said that this manufacturing process substantially reduces PCB deflection cracks in the capacitors as well as soldering cracks and acoustic noise concerns with the capacitors from excessive vibration.
Key specs include a capacitance range of 100 pF to 10,000 pF and an operating temperature range of −55°C to 125°C. The devices are also RoHS-compliant.
