Automotive vent conforms to stringent reliability requirements

By Majeed Ahmad, contributing editor

W. L. Gore & Associates has introduced a new venting solution that it claims meets the stringent reliability requirements for automotive electrical and electronic modules (EEMs). The High WEP Series boasts a greater level of ingress protection without sacrificing airflow performance or temperature resistance.

The new venting solution delivers nearly double the water entry pressure (WEP) resistance while maintaining minimum airflow of 15 l/h/cm2 at 7 kPa. This makes it highly effective in blocking the ingress of water, not just during sprays and splashes, but even during deep-water wading events.

Moreover, its chemically resistant GORE Membrane boasting 100% ePTFE provides lasting hydrophobic and oleophobic protection, even when exposed to brake or other automotive fluids. Gore claims that the High WEP Series has been engineered specifically for smaller, more densely configured enclosures in rugged automotive environments, particularly for exterior-mounted EEMs.

The miniaturization trend in vehicles is creating added challenges for weight reduction, component density, and thermal management. At the same time, extended OEM warranty periods demand corresponding increases in EEM reliability and life expectancy.

Gore's new venting solution provides temperature stability from –40°C to 150°C. Many under-hood applications — such as actuators for turbocharger flaps or exhaust gas recuperation valves — currently require this level of temperature resistance to reliably withstand normal operating conditions.

Furthermore, for motors, sensors, control units, actuators, and other sensitive EEMs, the low-profile High WEP Series can also help to reduce the complexity of enclosure design and testing. Next, installation via ultrasonic welding is fast and easy and creates a secure, durable bond to the grades of plastics like PBT and PA used for electronic modules.
