According to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 4 million mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI) or concussions are reported each year due to impacts in sports and recreational activities. Realizing the epidemic of this issue, Jeff Lawson, CEO of Sensuss, embarked on developing a portfolio of products to measure the impacts that athletes sustain. The Sensuss organization quickly realized they would need a skilled partner to help facilitate this project, so they called on Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, a business region of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), to help them launch this venture. With Avnet’s assistance, the award-winning Sensuss S3 and S2 products are being brought to market to create a paradigm shift in the treatment of head trauma.
Sensuss S2 and S# helmets and gloves sense traumatic sports injuries.
A 2013 Laureate in IDG's Computerworld Honors Program and 2013 ConnectedWorld Value Chain award winner, the S3 product is a helmet or glove-based device that monitors impacts and captures that information; it then uses machine-to-machine (M2M) technology to transmit and store that data, and through cloud-based applications provides real time assessments that protect the athlete from further potential harm. The S2 is a translucent helmet-based device that lights up when an athlete experiences a pre-defined level of impact; immediately sending an alert that a critical event may have occurred.
Sensuss brought Avnet into to this product evolution from an early stage to help realize its vision. Sensuss planned early on to produce its products at multiple international manufacturing facilities, and recognized that Avnet would be a very a strong advisor and business partner because of its supply chain expertise and global presence. Avnet then assisted the start-up company with broad-based supply chain support, including supplier identification, inventory management and FAE services.
“Avnet has been, and continues to be a loyal trusted partner in bringing these products to market,” said Lawson. “Avnet’s ability to provide components to any of several international manufacturing facilities, virtually on demand, has been a key enabler for us to ramp up our manufacturing. As Sensuss grows, our partnership with Avnet will be essential in receiving the supply chain support we need to quickly expand our products worldwide.”
“Sensuss is a classic example of American ingenuity at work. Jeff and team saw a need, then set out to make it a reality. Our team did its part to help,” said Ed Smith, president of Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas. “Avnet is committed to helping Sensuss and other small companies just like it make their dreams come to fruition through the design chain and supply chain products and services we provide.”
The Sensuss products use a combination of Analog Devices sensors, NXP microcontrollers, and a EuroTech Helios aggregator that uses Intel-based technology. The S3 supports 802.11 wifi, cellular or Zigbee standards. The S2 is available today for $99.99 at www.sensuss.com. The S3 is available for limited engagements.
