Backshells offer up to 20% weight savings

TE Connectivity’s swept elbow backshells for electrical and optic cables offer up to a 20% weight savings in a variety of military and aerospace applications

By Gina Roos, editor-in-chief

TE Connectivity has introduced swept elbow backshells for electrical and fiber cables in a wide range of military and aerospace applications. These backshells offer up to a 20% weight savings compared to traditional backshells.

The backshells provide a smooth 90° cable termination option and are designed with a smooth internal bore and a continuous bend radius. The backshells can be used in a range of circular connectors and are available in multiple shell sizes and plating configurations. Those include MIL-DTL-38999 Series III and IV as well as MIL-DTL-26482 Series II.

Available now in a band-strap (BT) termination style, the backshells provide strain relief and cable support to help reduce bending or over-flexing. Other termination style options will follow.

These backshells also improve ease of assembly in high-vibration applications with large wire bundles, said TE. They are designed to allow for uncoupling during repairs, which helps reduce damage to the boot, providing a fast termination option.
