Battery charger IC is fast and cool, targets mobile apps
Switch-mode Li-Ion charger minimizes power dissipation, cuts board space
The bq24150 3-MHz switch-mode battery-charge-management IC for portable electronics enables charging from an adapter or a USB port. The 2 x 2 mm switching charger improves charge time, reduces heat from power dissipation and cuts board space in half compared to typical implementation with linear chargers.
The device uses integrated 1.25-A FETs providing the industry’s smallest I2 C programmable buck-charger solution for USB-powered applications, such as smart phones, portable media players or other consumer electronics. The charger requires the use of a 1-µH inductor and small ceramic capacitors, resulting in a solution size of 7.6 x 10.4 mm. The IC also features a reverse boost USB On-the-Go (OTG) mode that generates a voltage supply to power accessories that are plugged into a mini-USB port.
The IC complies with USB charging standards, achieves 92% peak efficiency while supporting a USB battery charging current up to 900 mA. It has a 500-mA input current limit, 20-V maximum input voltage and 6-V operation. The device also offers ±5% input current limit accuracy and ±0.5% voltage regulation accuracy. The device features input current sensing and offers multiple programmable charge parameters up to 3.4 Mbps through an I2 C communications interface. It also provides a safety timer with reset control and short circuit, over-voltage and thermal protection. ($2 ea/1,000 – available now.)
