BGA socket delivers 27-GHz signals with little loss

A high performance socket for 1-mm pitch, 2,577-pin BGA ICs, the SG-BGA-6422 is designed for 52.5 x 52.5-mm IC packages, such as Xilinx FLGA2577 BGAs. The socket supports 27 GHz bandwidth on all connections with less than 1dB insertion loss, and is designed to dissipate up to several watts without extra heat sinking; it can handle up to 100 W with custom heat sink.

Contact resistance is typically 20 mΩ per pin, pin self-inductance is 0.15 nH, mutual inductance is 0.025 nH, and capacitance to ground is 0.01 pF. Current capacity is 2 A per pin. The socket mounts on a target PCB without soldering, and is constructed with shoulder screw and swivel lid which incorporates a quick insertion method so that ICs can be changed out quickly. The socket comes with ball guide for the precise alignment of BGA balls to PCB pads and is priced at $1,805 in single quantities.
