Researchers at the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) are working on developing electronics that dissolve when exposed to water.
Referred to as the “born-to-die” program, the goal is design transient technology that can literally disappear once its usefulness has expired. John Rogers, a professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University, explained that success in developing this self-destructing technology would ultimately help save space at landfills and reduce electronic waste overall.
While it hasn’t been perfected for larger gadgets just yet, the group has created a chip built on a thin film of silk that dissolves when hit with water. You can see it in action in the video below:
