Stuttgart, Germany-based Robert Bosch GmbH has set up a new company — Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions GmbH — focused on supporting and developing products and services for the internet of things (IoT). The new company says it “will supply compact electronic products and software expertise designed to make devices and objects intelligent and web-enabled across a broad range of applications.” Their initial plan is to address the needs of so-called smart homes for sensor-based applications; they will also persue traffic, transportation, and logistics applications.
As the revenue leader in micro-electromechanical –system (MEMS) sensors, Bosch already produces more than one billion MEMS units a year for the automotive and consumer electronics markets. Bosch Connected Devices and Solutions, which is headquartered in Reutlingen, Germany with sites in Coimbatore, India, and Suzhou, China, is specializing in development of networked sensors and actuators.
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month, Bosch plans to showcase many of the possibilities IoT offers for the home. In its booth — Stand 20812 in South Hall 1 at the Las Vegas Convention and World Trade Center (LVCC )— a wireless network of multiple sensors will be installed in a mock-up of a home, continuously reading and transmiting information on the local environment. Visitors will be able to find out which doors in the “home”are open or closed, how noisy it is, and how temperature, pressure, and humidity have varied over the course of the day at different locations.
