San Francisco-based design and engineering studio Bot & Dolly has released a visually stunning live performance film featuring projected 3D computer imagery, fast-moving industrial robots, and amazing CG effects.
The clip, entitled “Box,” features a bevy of technologies working with one another: two Kuka industrial robots move blank walls around while a projector displays CG imagery onto them in sync with their movement; a second projector aimed at the floor provides complementary visual effects.
The entire film is captured with a 4K camera mounted on a third Kuka robot which moves in time with the other two. Everything is sewn together with some fairly sophisticated B&D proprietary software.
No CGI after-effects were added to the film afterwards so, theoretically speaking, what you see in the film is exactly what you would experience if you were standing in front of everything.
“Bot & Dolly's kinematic projection platform makes it possible to synchronize projection with moving objects,” said Tarik Abdel-Gawad, Creative Director, in the company’s press release. “Through large-scale robotics, projection mapping and software engineering, audiences will witness the trompe l'oeil effect pushed to new boundaries.
We believe this methodology has powerful applications in a wide range of fields and we're excited to push it even further.”
Worth noting about the film is that after each technique is performed, the robotic mechanism behind it is revealed; that is, there are no secrets to this on-screen magic.
