Bourns, Inc. has announced an advanced, space-saving EdgMOV varistor series with high surge protection performance in a space-saving design. The new family with high surge capabilities are available in a range of model options that allow designers to select the size and level of surge protection for their applications.
The range of options, for example, enable designers to specify a higher surge rating with a lower clamping voltage or the same surge rating with a smaller diameter protection device, according to Bourns. It also allows designers to select a higher MOV voltage, while maintaining the same clamping voltage, which helps reduce the potential of MOV leakage current, which can cause failures.
The EdgMOV disc varistors are designed to match common MOV footprints, allowing for drop-in replacement without any PCB redesign. They are available in four model family sizes of 7 mm, 10 mm, 14 mm and 20 mm with nominal current ratings of 1.5 kA, 3 kA, 5 kA and 8 kA, respectively.
The EdgMOV varistors offer comparable surge ratings of the next larger size of conventional MOV components, Bourns said. For example, a 10-mm EdgMOV surge protector is rated for 3-kA nominal current (15 operations), which is comparable to a current typical 14-mm standard MOV (typically also rated at 3-kA nominal current).
If a designer wants to increase the primary protector performance without increasing its size, a similarly sized EdgMOV protector can be selected to replace the existing MOV, with enhanced performance in the same package size, the company added.
In addition, the coating material used in the EdgMOV devices is rated for use up to 105°C, which is higher than the standard 85°C. “UL requires components that are rated higher than 85 °C to undergo 1000 hours of an aging test, helping to increase maximum equipment lifespan for end users,” Bourns said.
Available now, the EdgMOV disc varistor series is RoHS compliant and halogen free. For more information, visit the varistor product page (EV series).
