The doctor was arrested following a two-week investigation into the matter and accused of covering for six colleagues.
Her lawyers claim she was forced into performing the task for fear of losing her job.
Reasons aside, at the time of her arrest, Ferreira was found with six silicone fingers on her, three of which have since been identified as bearing the fingerprints of her co-workers.
The incident took place in the town Ferraz de Vasconcelos, which is near Sao Paulo. The town’s mayor, Acir Fillo, has already requested that five employees of the medical service supposedly involved in the scheme, step aside from their posts.
Local council has launched a public inquiry into the matter, while Brazil’s ministry of health has stated it will soon launch its own inquiry as well.
In an interview, Fillo admitted that the police investigation has so far come up with approximately 300 additional public employees from his town, involved in areas including health, education, and security, all of whom are receiving pay but not going to work.
The investigation is on-going.
