The IRIS (Intelligent Release Interconnect System) is a breakaway fiber-optic cable connector designed to minimize damage to the installed fiber plant in a traffic-light control enclosure. The system features a plug-and-play interconnect that can accommodate from 6 to 12 fiber-optic channels and is preterminated to eliminate field installation time and protect from dust and moisture.
The IRIS uses a circular sensing ring able to detect horizontal or tangential force within a 360° horizon. If tension is detected, the connector will disengage from the fiber optic cable. A fully-restored connection can be made within minutes without field repair or retermination of the fiber-optic cable. The retrofittable IRIS can also protect vulnerable nodes within cabinet housings for traffic communications networks that support message boards, traffic sensors, and TV observation cameras.
