Buck converters deliver enhanced efficiency

Synchronous buck converters from Diodes Inc. deliver improved efficiency to automotive point-of-load applications.

Diodes Inc. has released two new synchronous buck converters. Targeting automotive point-of-load (PoL) applications, the  AP66200Q and AP66300Q support a wide input voltage range from 3.8 V to 60 V. This translates into support for 12-V, 24-V, and 48-V automotive systems.

The AP66200Q and AP66300Q meet the <100-µA standby requirements associated with many automotive applications thanks to their low quiescent current (IQ) of 40 μA, said Diodes. They can be configured to operate in either pulse frequency modulation (PFM) or pulse width modulation (PWM) modes. When in PFM mode, improved efficiency will be achieved at light loads, said the company, and operation in PWM mode will result in low ripple across all loads.

In addition, the PoL synchronous buck converters deliver high-efficiency step-down conversion in vehicle powertrain, telematics, infotainment, and lighting systems due to their integrated power MOSFETs. The AP66200Q integrates a 185-mΩ high-side power MOSFET and an 80-mΩ low-side power MOSFET, while the AP66300Q incorporates a 120-mΩ high-side power MOSFET and a 55-mΩ low-side power MOSFET.

Other features include adjustable switching frequency capabilities (up to 2.5 MHz), which can be synchronized to avoid beat frequency issues, low on-state resistance (RDS(ON)) values and enhanced efficiency modes for a significant reduction in internal power dissipation. The soft-start pin is programmable to reduce inrush current and can be used for tracking multiple output voltages.

“Engineers have the flexibility to choose between high-efficiency operation or a smaller system design,” said the company.

The AP66200Q and AP66300Q are AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified. They are supplied in compact 16-pin U-QFN4040-16/SWP (Type UXB) packages. They are priced at $1.30 and $1.50 for the AP66200Q and AP66300Q, respectively, in quantities of 10,000.
