Cable assemblies boast zero-halogen, low-smoke properties

By Majeed Ahmad, contributing editor

CDM Electronics has announced the availability of semi-custom cable assemblies that boast low-smoke properties and are targeted at RF, Ethernet (RJ45), and power applications. The SAFER Cable Assembly Series is intended for spaces where large amounts of cables are in close proximity to people or sensitive electronic equipment.

In such situations, PVC’s combustive toxicity is restricted by fire code. On the other hand, low-smoke zero-halogen (LSZH) cable assemblies reduce toxicity and corrosivity that can otherwise harm buildings, electronic equipment, and metallic structures.

Moreover, cable assemblies featuring LSZH reduce the amount and density of smoke to make it easier for occupants to exit a space in the event of a fire. Therefore, these cable assemblies are commonly used in mass transit, airports, commercial aircrafts, submarines and ships, telecommunications facilities, museums, and designated historic structures.

The SAFER cable assemblies are available in popular configurations, ranging from 1- to 25-foot lengths. Assemblies are over-molded for added safety and durability, and they meet all applicable CMR, UL/NEC, CSA, and NFPA safety requirements.

The SAFER RF jumper assemblies — engineered for aerospace and shipboard applications — are manufactured using low-smoke, zero-halogen, and low-loss cables. The SAFER Ethernet assemblies are preconfigured with straight, left-facing, or right-facing RJ45 connectors to meet applications’ safety and space parameters.

Next, the SAFER power assemblies are terminated with standard NEMA 5-15 and IEC 60320 C13 receptacles, which are suitable for nearly all computers and peripheral devices. All of these cable assemblies can be ordered in prototype and production quantities. Fully customized SAFER cable assemblies are also available.
